The Oberoi Beach Resort is set on a serene spot in Turtle Bay Marine Park on the sheltered northwest coast in historic Balaclava. Heritage monuments from the French colonial military lie scattered in the grounds. Across the lagoon is a panorama of mountains surrounding the capital and Port Louis, along with Grand Baie, is a 15-minute drive. The service is spot on. The hotel has a club-like atmosphere and personable, but discreet, uniformed staff. Expect spoiling afternoon treats such as mojito ice cream delivered to your sun lounger, and a complimentary candlelit rose petal bath awaits romantic couples at turndown.

Seventy-one serene and lofty sea-facing pavilions and walled villas, named after plants in the garden, all have four-poster beds in American oak and cane furniture. Wall-to-wall windows, a sunken marble bath and modern conveniences also feature in the rooms.

Generously sized Luxury Pavilions – large suites with bougainvillea-clad terraces – will offer more than enough for most, but Luxury Pool Villas with a dining pavilion are simply gorgeous, and half the size of a football field (popular rooms 205 and 206 are beachfront). The ultra-private Royal Villas are a favourite with Presidents.
